Description

We are pleased to present this extremely rare right-hand-drive BMW 3.0CSL.

The E9-series 3.0CS Coupe, which debuted in 1968, initially launched with a 2.8L engine but was later upgraded to a 3.0L displacement to achieve strong results in touring car championships. This particular vehicle is the 3.0CSL, a lightweight variant that is exceptionally rare even among the 3.0CS models. The body design builds on the style of the previous 2000CS model, created by Michelotti, and was refined by Gandini, then chief designer at Bertone, resulting in a sportier and more striking appearance.
In 1971, following an increase in displacement and various improvements, the 3.0CS and 3.0CSi models were introduced to replace the 2800CS.The top-of-the-line 3.0 CSi model was equipped with Bosch D-Jetronic electronic fuel injection and, thanks to a higher compression ratio, delivered 200 horsepower at 5,500 rpm, establishing itself as a high-performance personal luxury car.Among these, a homologation model for racing—the 3.0CSL—was introduced in 1972, and this vehicle is that lightweight version.

This particular example is a rare right-hand-drive variant. At first glance, one might assume it was intended for the British market, but it is interesting to note that, specifically for the 3.0 CSL—and with circuit use in mind (since most circuits run clockwise)—many right-hand-drive units were produced even though they were not intended for the UK market.Of the 30,565 E9 coupes produced in total, only 1,265 were the homologation-spec CSL models. Of those, 500 were right-hand-drive. This speaks volumes about how extensively the 3.0CSL was used on the racetrack.Naturally, it is believed that many were lost in accidents or rendered inoperable after racing, making 3.0 CSLs with their original bodies extremely rare today.

Consequently, the engine in this vehicle has also been swapped out and now features an M88 unit from the E24 M6, producing 265馬力.The 3.5-liter, 24-valve inline-six engine is paired with a Kedorag 5-speed transmission, and the vehicle has undergone official structural modifications. It’s only natural that it delivers even more power than the original 3.0-liter engine, and its magnificent exhaust note—reminiscent of the BMW M1, which is equipped with the same engine—is truly exceptional.Furthermore, since the 3.0 CSL was originally developed as a homologation model for racing, various parts of the body were naturally lightened, while others were reinforced. This vehicle has been modified with even wider fender flares; it is unclear whether this modification was made while it was in Europe, but in any case, it is a rare specification.

This vehicle was imported to Japan in Showa 54 and has passed through several owners since then; the body is in near-original condition and has not been restored. The interior is also close to its original condition, with the exception of the steering wheel. Although the car is currently fitted with larger wheels, the original wheels are included. If

you’re interested, this is definitely a car you’ll want to see in person.
